back pain

A person with back pain has discomfort in the back. Back pain is commonly caused by a muscle strain in the back. Acute lumbar strain is the most common cause of lower back pain. Additional causes of back pain include irritation or inflammation of the bones, ligaments, disks, and spinal nerves that branch off the spinal cord. Rarely, diseased organs in the chest or abdomen cause back pain.

Symptoms that commonly occur with back pain include back stiffness, muscle spasms, and tenderness over the back muscles. Symptoms that indicate a serious cause for back pain include severe back pain that shoots down the leg, leg numbness, leg weakness, groin numbness, and difficulty urinating. Additional symptoms that indicate a serious condition include fainting, excessive sweating, high fever, abdominal pain, and chest pain
